As Thanksgiving approaches this year, I find myself reflecting on the tapestry of experiences that have colored my 65 years. Having reached the pinnacle of my career and achieved many of the goals I once dreamed of, I’m now in a unique season of life, where every day offers the opportunity for new firsts.
Having just returned from visiting Sicily this week, where I took in many Greek ruins. I was most impressed with the Vally of the Temples, one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world outside of Greece. It houses some of the best-preserved Ancient Greek ruins, including the remains of nine ancient sacred temples. So, in the context of gratitude, in the words of the Greek philosopher Epicurus… “Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.” And … “”He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.” These quotes resonate deeply with me.
This Thanksgiving, as I sit at the dinner table surrounded by those I love, I will be giving thanks not only for what I have achieved but also for the unexpected joys that come with pursuing new beginnings. Whether it’s picking up a new hobby, traveling to a country I’ve never visited, doing A Leap Year of First or simply enjoying the quiet moments life presents – each day is a gift. It’s the people in our lives—family, friends, colleagues, and even strangers—who add richness to our existence.
There’s a profound beauty in acknowledging that gratitude isn’t just for the milestones but also for the small, everyday moments that make life meaningful. As I look back on my life’s journey, I realize how each experience, challenge, and triumph has been a steppingstone to where I am today.
This Thanksgiving, I encourage everyone, regardless of where you are in life, to pause and find gratitude in your current chapter. Embrace the new firsts, cherish the memories, and hold onto the wisdom that only comes with age. Let gratitude be the lens through which you view life, and you’ll find that it becomes even more vibrant and fulfilling.
Happy Thanksgiving to all, and may your hearts be as full as your plates this holiday season. May you experience many more fulfilling firsts in the coming year!
